Fighter for the Cause

This article is about Lydia Guevara, daughter of Ernesto Guevara who is an active vegetarian. Ernesto Guevara was famous for supporting Fidel Castro's rise to power. Lydia is acting as a spokes woman for fellow vegetarians in South America. In her photo she demonstrates strength and focus. She has her fists clenched while wearing army pants and an army vest made out of baby carrots. I think it is good that people in other countries are active vegetarians and care about trying to get the importance of it across to other people. I think more people should voice their opinions about it and why it's important to them. I think the article could add more information about the trends of vegetarianism in South America.

Chef Brian

I interviewed my brother who is a chef and has been cooking for over 8 years. I interviewed him on his views about vegetarianism and the cuisine. My brother is a great cook. Even though he is not a vegetarian, I know he knows what he's talking about. He gives helpful advice on ways to make vegetarian cooking a lot easier.

Non-linear story

My non-linear story will consist of different aspects of vegetarianism that I have learned through interviewing different people familiar with the lifestyle. I talked to people who are not interested it, people who have been vegetarians for a long time and an actual chef who has real experience with vegetarian cooking.

Audio Story

I did my audio story on a few students and their opinions of being a vegetarian; not many people are as fond of the idea as I thought.

Feature Story

My feature story is a 'How to' for becoming a vegetarian. It involves three different sources of various ages who offer some advice and share their thoughts about being a vegetarian. My friend Lauren is my age and has been a vegetarian since the beginning of highschool. My boss is 30 and has been a vegetarian for over 3 years. One of my mom's co-workers has been a super-hero since like the 80's. Each of them offer advice from their own perspectives which is helpful to people of all ages.

Audio Story

I need to understand further what the soundbites entail. I think I might do an informative audio story on easy vegetarian dishes for the average college student and mediocre cook, like me. :)

3 hard news leads turned into broadcast style

1a) The Police Department ousted its top leadership yesterday in the Central District, a move that comes amid violent attacks in the downtown area and one day after The Baltimore Sun reported that officers had failed to properly handle the robbery of a nanny in Bolton Hill.

Maj. John Bailey, a 35-year veteran, and his second in command, Deputy Maj. Avon Mackell, a 21-year veteran, were stripped of their command positions after what sources described as a particularly heated exchange with department leadership after a woman was choked and robbed of an iPod while she walked with a baby Monday afternoon.

1b) Sources say that Major John Bailey and Deputy Major Avon Mackell got fired for not successfully handling the attack of a woman in her apartment.

2a) Police have found the car belonging to a southern Maryland man who's accused of killing his wife, then telling police the couple had been carjacked.

2b) Police have found the car of the man who has been accused of killing his wife.

3a) It's still probably too early to tell if the Orioles will be serious players in the Miguel Angel Sano sweepstakes, but they appear to be at least considering it. Sano, a 16-year-old shortstop who will be one of the most coveted international free agents when the signing period begins on July 2, was part of a group of 40 players the Orioles worked out on Friday at their Dominican Republic baseball academy.

3b) Orioles consider 16-year-old shortstop as a possible player.

1st Experiences

Lauren Yastremsky has been an active vegetarian for almost seven years. I have known Lauren since the 6th grade and she was not brought up to be a vegetarian. She lives in a house with her mom, brother and sister who are not vegetarians. Lauren decided in 9th grade that she didn't want to eat meat anymore. She has a endearing love for animals and one day she realized that meat was a cruel unnecessary foundation in her diet.

"It was easy to go without heavy meats at first, because I was actually trying to lose weight," said Lauren. Lauren says that it can be tricky at first because its very easy to tempt yourself. It is best to avoid restaurants for awhile, because you find yourself reading the descriptions of all the past foods you use to love.

I remember in 11th grade we all went out to dinner at Cheeseburger and Paradise and Lauren ordered a veggie burger. I remember thinking, "That is just grose."

My mom hasn't eaten cow, pig, or turkey for almost five years. She will only eat chicken and fish. Veggie burgers started to become a consistent item in our freezer. One day when there wasn't anything to eat I decided to try one. Turns out they weren't that bad. If you put all the necessary condiments on it, with some lettuce, tomatoe and onion, then your good to go. It really doesn't taste much different than a regular burger. Don't let me fool you, I'm not far in front of you on the path of becoming a vegetarian. I have however, tried a veggie burger in the Brickstreet Cafe on campus. If ever one day your feeling bold, you should swing by and give it a try.

"I really like vegetables," Lauren said. She told me that she could just open a can of green beans and eat that for lunch. That image kind of made me want to gag. She also said that you would be amazed at what foods you can still eat without meat. You can still have your eggs for breakfast, Quiznos salad for lunch, and your Mom's pasta for dinner. In my next blog I'll go into further detail what meals you can still eat and enjoy as a vegetarian.

I talked a little bit more about Lauren's lifestyle in this link.

Into the Dark and Cold story uses Wall Street Journal Formula

Lead-A Johns Hopkins University engineering professor helped guide an underwater vehicle this week to one of the coldest, darkest, most remote places on Earth.

Nut Graph-Louis Whitcomb and his team - safe and dry aboard a research vessel in the western Pacific - guided the 18-foot-long robotic submersible Nereus by remote control as it plunged to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The dive marked the first time since 1998 that man has probed so far into the crushing depths of the Earth's greatest abyss.

Several quotes were used to support the story-
a)"It is a humbling experience to remotely pilot a vehicle into such an extreme, hostile, lightless environment," said Whitcomb, 47, one of three principal investigators with the expedition.
b)
"The temperature is [near freezing] and the pressure is 1,100 times the pressure we experience on the Earth's surface," Whitcomb said via e-mail from the research ship Kilo Moana, operated from Guam by the University of Hawaii.
c)"Nereus is capable of this task," Whitcomb said, but "it is not the ideal vehicle for this particular operation if, for example, heavy manipulation of wreckage is required."

Gave more background info on Whitcomb-
Whitcomb's private time has been devoted to an old wooden sailboat and, with his wife, to the rescue of golden retrievers. At work, he directs Hopkins' Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics, where he developed systems for guiding and scaling the forces applied by surgical robots."He's very committed to systems that have real-world impact," said Greg Hager, a Hopkins computer scientist and long-time friend.Whitcomb'scontribution to Nereus was its navigation system.

The story ended with a reference back to Whitcomb-
Other Hopkins scientists assisting Whitcomb onboard include Stephen Martin, James Kinsey, Michael Jakuba and doctoral candidate Sarah Webster.

Potential Feature Story Ideas

I figure that for those who are considering become a vegetarian, probably are not sure what are the best ways to approach it. I think offering a how-to is a good idea on how to get people started. I could list possible meals, especially easy ones for the mediocre cook much like myself.

Another idea I had was to write a trend story. I would inform people of the impact becoming a vegetarian has had on college kids. How many people our age are actually vegetarians? Is it something they enjoy? Do they see themselves as being vegetarians for the rest of their lives? What advice can they offer to others?

Feature Lead vs. Summary Lead

A summary lead is intended to give the reader everything they should expect in the story all in the first sentence. You must tell them the five W's: who, what, when where and why. The 'how' is also very important in the lead. You must be concise and not use any unnecessary words. Using the inverted pyramid is affective and helps to illustrate your main point more clearly.

A feature lead has a different intent then the typical summary lead. It is used to give your reader a sort of creative outline of what the story is going to be about, without giving them all the explicit details. There is also a wide range of different feature leads. There is the anecdotal lead, where the writer gives the basic point of the story and then uses a anecdote to support it. Another form is called the narrative lead, where you issue a more lengthy lead including a story or quotes. Descriptive leads are good if you wish to focus your story on a specific topic, such as a person or place. Question leads are affective only when they are used to completely catch the reader off guard. Even though there are a variety of feature leads it is best to experiment with each until you find the one that works the best with your story.

1) As President Obama's nominee to the high court began her rounds on Capitol Hill yesterday, her task was to be seen but not heard. In the entirety of her public appearance with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sotomayor's only words were "thank you" -- and those were mouthed, not spoken aloud. She increased her word output 50 percent during her appearance later with Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), saying to him: "Thank you, sir."

2) Ten movies in 14 years may not seem like a lot, until you realize that it took five years and an army of computer animators, designers, sound- and visual-effects artists, voice actors and software engineers to create 98 minutes of "Up."
